Many infertile women who can afford a donor for egg donation can consider egg donation as the best option, as it involves natural pregnancy for the woman fertilized with the sperm of the father. Fertilization through egg donation is termed as an assisted reproductive technology which involves retrieval of egg from the donor, fertilization of the egg with sperm in the lab and inseminating the embryo in the uterus. There is much more to the procedure than the above mentioned statement. There are risks involved in the process which are explained to any donor before the procedure. If there is no time to find out everything after going down to a clinic, there are a few websites like donateeggs.org which contain everything to know about egg donation and the procedure.

The process

The first step of the process is to collect the egg from the donor. There are a few factors to select the donor like the age, health etc. Few medical screening tests are done prior to finalize the selection. After selecting an appropriate egg donor, she is injected with a medication to repress the original cycle of the donor so that the cycle matches exactly with the recipient. Synchronizing the cycles will help in maintaining the cycles of both the women, so that the egg growth is in line with the uterine wall growth.

Next, the egg is checked for complete development and once they are up to the mark, ovulation is triggered through injecting HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Now, the eggs are retrieved transvaginally and fertilized with the father’s sperm. This is usually done under laboratory conditions and after the 3rd day of fertilization, the embryos are implanted in the mother’s womb. Later the mother can undergo a normal test to confirm pregnancy. This is the entire process involving pregnancy through egg donation.
